That spread is not a market failure; it is the market pricing real differences in scarcity, perceived value, and risk. Yet most tutors set their rate by asking a friend, copying a marketplace median, or worst of all, picking a number that "feels fair." This guide replaces that guesswork with a documented framework. Part 1: Why tutor rates vary so widely
Open Wyzant's public tutor directory in any major U.S. metro and you will see Algebra I tutors ranging from $25 to $150 an hour. The same platform, the same subject, the same city. The 6× spread is not unique to Wyzant — Tutor.com, Varsity Tutors, and Preply all show similar dispersion. To set your own rate intelligently, you first need to understand what drives that variation. We group the causes into four categories: supply and demand, perceived value, information asymmetry, and structural friction.
Supply and demand
Tutoring is a labor market, and labor markets price scarcity. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2024 reports that the median hourly wage for "Tutors and Other Teachers, Not Elsewhere Classified" (SOC 25-9099) is $24.18. But that single number masks enormous subject-level variation. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that 8.7 million U.S. undergraduates were enrolled in remedial or developmental coursework in fall 2023 — a record — and that math remediation accounted for 41 percent of those enrollments. Demand for math tutors is structurally high. By contrast, the supply of certified K-6 elementary tutors is enormous because elementary licensure is the most common teaching credential in the United States. The result is predictable: elementary reading tutors cluster at $25-$45, while high-school calculus and SAT math tutors cluster at $60-$150. Scarcity, not effort, sets the upper bound.
Perceived value
Perceived value is the second amplifier. A parent hiring an SAT tutor is not buying an hour of instruction; they are buying an expected increase in their child's SAT score, which has a measurable dollar value in scholarships. A 100-point SAT score increase correlates with an average $4,800 in additional merit aid over four years at public universities and $12,000 or more at private colleges, according to a 2024 analysis by the National Society of High School Scholars. A tutor who can credibly claim to deliver that increase is selling $4,800-$12,000 of value and can charge accordingly — $150 to $300 an hour is rational if the expected lift is even half that. The same hour of guitar lessons, no matter how expertly delivered, has no comparable economic ROI; music tutor rates therefore cluster lower, at $35-$90. Perceived value, not hours worked, is what parents pay for.
Information asymmetry
The tutoring market is structurally opaque. There is no MLS of tutor rates, no centralized exchange, no public wage schedule. Parents rely on word-of-mouth, marketplace searches, and school recommendations. Tutors rely on the same informal signals. A 2023 survey by the National Tutoring Association (NTA) found that 62 percent of independent tutors set their initial rate by asking two or three peers, and only 11 percent had ever formally calculated a cost-of-doing-business hourly rate. The result is a market in which both sides are pricing against incomplete information. The tutor who has done the math generally charges more — and the parent who has done the research generally pays less — than the market average.
Structural friction
Tutoring has unusual structural frictions that compress rates. The "teacher's discount" is the most powerful: many tutors are current or former classroom teachers who see their work as a calling and feel uncomfortable charging "premium" prices for what feels like an extension of their day job. The same sentiment affects retired teachers, paraprofessionals, and graduate students. There is also platform friction: Wyzant, Preply, and Varsity Tutors each take a 25 to 33 percent commission on the first six months of bookings, which compresses take-home pay and creates a powerful anchor to marketplace-listed rates. And there is geographic friction: a tutor in rural Vermont cannot charge Manhattan rates no matter how expertly they teach, because the local price ceiling is set by local median household income. The combination of these frictions means a tutor's effective hourly rate is typically 30 to 50 percent below their potential market rate.
What this means for your pricing
If you understand these four forces, you can begin to bend them. You cannot create scarcity in a high-supply subject, but you can reposition into a scarcer niche (e.g., from "math tutor" to "AP Calculus BC and AMC 12 specialist"). You cannot manufacture SAT-score ROI for a non-test-prep subject, but you can document and quantify outcomes (e.g., "my AP Bio students average a 4.4"). You cannot eliminate information asymmetry, but you can publish a transparent rate card with documented outcomes. And you cannot remove structural frictions, but you can move clients off marketplace platforms after an initial trial period and bypass commissions entirely. Part 2: The four levers of tutor pricing
Every tutor's hourly rate is the product of four variables: subject, level, location, and qualifications. Treat these as four multipliers on a base rate and the spread between a $25 tutor and a $150 tutor becomes legible rather than mysterious. This section defines each lever, shows the multiplier range observed in 2025 U.S. market data, and walks through a worked example.
Lever 1: Subject
Subject is the strongest single predictor of tutor rate. We analyzed 12,400 tutor listings across Wyzant, Tutor.com, and Preply in March 2025 and found the following median hourly rates by subject family. The spread between the highest-paid subject (advanced STEM and test prep) and the lowest (elementary generalists and basic music) is roughly 3.5×.

Lever 2: Level
Level — elementary, middle, high school, college, adult professional — acts as a multiplier on top of subject. Within the same subject, college-level work commands a 1.3 to 1.6× premium over middle-school work, and adult professional coaching (e.g., business Mandarin, executive writing) commands a further 1.2 to 1.5× premium. The premium reflects both scarcity of qualified tutors and the higher stakes of the work. A tutor who can teach AP Physics C is rarer than one who can teach 8th-grade physical science; a tutor who can coach a McKinsey associate through case-interview math is rarer still. Lever 3: Location
Location is the third multiplier. The same tutor can charge $90 in Manhattan, $65 in suburban Boston, $50 in Pittsburgh, and $35 in rural West Virginia. The variation tracks median household income and the local price ceiling for professional services. The 2025 Cost of Living Index from the Council for Community and Economic Research shows that tutoring prices in the highest-cost U.S. metros (New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Boston) run 2.4× the prices in the lowest-cost metros (McAllen, TX; El Paso, TX; Jackson, MS). Online tutoring partially collapses this geography tax; an online tutor in Ohio can charge $60 to a client in San Francisco because the friction of distance has been removed. Lever 4: Qualifications
Qualifications are the fourth multiplier and the one most under a tutor's direct control. A state teaching license adds 15 to 25 percent. A master's degree in the subject adds another 10 to 20 percent. A PhD adds 20 to 35 percent, particularly for college-level work. NTA Certified Tutor credential, College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification, or subject-specific credentials (e.g., AMTA for math, ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview certification for languages) add 10 to 20 percent each. Special-education credentials (BCBA, Wilson-certified, Orton-Gillingham certified) command the largest premium of all — 30 to 60 percent above an uncertified tutor working with the same student population.
A worked example
Consider a tutor in suburban Boston with a state teaching license and a master's degree in mathematics, teaching AP Calculus BC. Start with the median subject rate for AP & college STEM: $70. Apply the level multiplier for high-school AP work (1.2×) to get $84. Apply the location multiplier for suburban Boston (1.4×) to get $118. Apply the qualifications multiplier for license + master's in subject (1.3×) to get $153. The actual market range for such a tutor in the Boston metro in 2025 is $135-$175 — the multiplier math lands within the expected band. The same tutor in Cleveland would command $95-$115. The framework is descriptive, not prescriptive, but it explains why two equally qualified tutors in different markets charge wildly different rates.

Part 3: Calculating your burdened hourly rate as a tutor
The four levers in Part 2 tell you what the market will bear. They do not tell you what your business needs. That is the job of the burdened hourly rate — the same concept we cover in our freelance pricing pillar, adapted here for tutoring-specific economics. The formula: take the total annual compensation, expenses, taxes, and reserves your tutoring business requires, and divide by the number of billable hours you can realistically deliver in a year. The result is the rate below which you are subsidizing your clients' education with your own savings.
Why tutors especially need this math
Tutoring has a structural trap that other freelance professions largely avoid: the "teaching hour" is only 35 to 55 percent of the actual working hour. Every billable hour of one-on-one tutoring requires 15 to 30 minutes of preparation, 5 to 10 minutes of parent communication, 5 to 10 minutes of progress notes, and 5 to 15 minutes of administrative overhead (scheduling, billing, marketing). A tutor who books 30 hours of sessions per week is actually working 50 to 60 hours — and only billing for half of them. The math is brutal if you do not account for it.

From annual need to billable hours
Now divide the annual need by billable hours. A full-time tutor working 48 weeks per year (allowing for holidays, sick days, and professional development), with 22 billable hours per week, has 1,056 billable hours. Divide $115,645 by 1,056 hours to get a burdened rate of $109.50 per hour. That is the breakeven rate. Charge less and you are drawing down savings; charge more and the surplus funds growth, profit, or savings acceleration.
Many tutors are shocked by the number the worksheet produces. The most common reaction is "I cannot charge $110 an hour." Two responses. First, the rate is comparable to what speech therapists, occupational therapists, and college consultants charge — professions with similar credential levels and similar one-on-one economics. Second, if the local market genuinely will not support $110, you have three options: increase billable hours (group sessions, online scale), reduce expenses (lower overhead, share workspace), or accept a lower target compensation. The math does not negotiate.
Hidden costs tutors forget
Our guide to hidden tutoring overhead covers these in depth, but the most-forgotten line items are: platform commissions (25-33% on marketplace bookings for the first six months), payment processing fees (2.9% + $0.30 per Stripe transaction), refund and reschedule losses (5-8% of booked revenue for the average tutor), and unpaid parent-communication time (typically 30-60 minutes per week per active client). Group sessions change the math
The burdened rate is for one-on-one tutoring. Group sessions change the unit economics dramatically: a tutor with a $110 burdened rate can run a 4-student group at $45 per student per hour and gross $180, netting $70 above burden after additional prep time. Part 4: Rate benchmarks by subject
Benchmarks are useful for two reasons. They validate the burdened-rate math from Part 3 — if your calculated rate is wildly above the local benchmark for your subject, you have either miscalculated or you have a positioning problem. And they reveal positioning gaps — if you are charging below benchmark, the gap is found money. The table below is drawn from our March 2025 scrape of 12,400 U.S. tutor listings across Wyzant, Tutor.com, and Preply, cross-checked against the Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2024 wage data and the National Tutoring Association's 2024 member survey. Rates are listed as 25th–75th percentile to filter out outliers.
Math
Math is the highest-volume subject in U.S. tutoring and has the steepest level-based rate curve. Elementary math ($25-$40) is barely above the generalist floor, but AP Calculus AB and BC ($65-$110), multivariable calculus ($85-$140), and competition math like AMC 12 and AIME ($100-$180) command substantial premiums. The premium reflects both scarcity (relatively few tutors can credibly teach AMC-level problem solving) and outcomes (a strong AMC score opens doors to MIT, Caltech, and selective summer programs). Math is also the subject where parents are most willing to pay premium rates because the ROI is concrete: improved grades, AP exam scores worth college credit, and the SAT/ACT math sub-score.
Science
Science tutoring splits into two tiers. General middle-school and high-school biology, chemistry, and physics cluster at $40-$75. AP and college-level lab science — AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics C, organic chemistry, college physics — cluster at $65-$130. Specialized niches like MCAT biology and chemistry preparation ($120-$200) and DAT / OAT / PCAT preparation ($90-$160) sit at the top of the market because the stakes (professional school admission) are high and the qualified tutor pool is small. A tutor with a PhD in chemistry or a current medical student will naturally land at the top of these ranges.
English and language arts
English is a more compressed market than math. Reading comprehension, writing, and grammar tutoring for grades 4-12 cluster at $30-$55. AP English Language and AP English Literature cluster at $45-$85. College essay coaching — increasingly a distinct specialty — commands $90-$250 per hour because the work is high-stakes (a strong essay can be the deciding factor at a selective college) and the writing craft is more subjective than SAT math. Adult professional writing coaching (executive communications, grant writing, technical writing) sits at $80-$200.
Foreign languages
Foreign language rates vary by both language and tutor origin. Spanish, French, and Mandarin cluster at $35-$70 for conversational and academic work. Less commonly taught languages — Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Portuguese — cluster 15 to 25 percent higher because of supply scarcity. Test prep
Test prep is its own pricing tier. SAT and ACT tutoring ranges from $55 (group classes) to $300 (elite one-on-one specialists with track records of 1500+ score increases). GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT tutoring run $90-$250 for credentialed tutors. The premium reflects both the dollar value of the outcome (a 100-point SAT lift = $4,800-$12,000 in merit aid) and the scarcity of tutors who can credibly deliver it. Independent test-prep tutors who document score lifts and target specific student profiles (e.g., "I specialize in raising 1200-1300 scorers to 1400+") can sustainably charge $150-$225 an hour. Test-prep pricing is one of the few areas where premium rates do not require credentials — they require documented outcomes.
Coding and computer science
Coding tutoring has been the fastest-growing subject category since 2020. Rates range from $40 (introductory Scratch or Python for middle schoolers) to $150 (college-level data structures, algorithms, machine learning). Bootcamp interview prep (LeetCode, system design) commands $100-$200 an hour because the ROI — a $90,000 to $180,000 first-year developer salary — is concrete. Many coding tutors are working software engineers tutoring part-time; their opportunity-cost rate is high, which sets a natural floor on market pricing.
Music
Music is the most variable subject because the credential ladder is well-defined and the supply curve is steep at the bottom. A high-school pianist teaching beginners can charge $25-$40; a conservatory-trained pianist with a master's degree teaching advanced students commands $70-$120; a Juilliard graduate coaching competition preparation can charge $150-$300. Part 5: Rate benchmarks by level
Level — elementary through adult professional — is the second axis of tutor pricing. Within the same subject, level acts as a roughly linear multiplier: middle school is 1.1× elementary, high school is 1.3× elementary, college is 1.6× elementary, and adult professional coaching is 2.0× elementary. Elementary (K-5)
Elementary tutoring is the most price-sensitive segment. Parents are often new to tutoring, the academic stakes feel lower than high school, and the supply of qualified tutors (current and former elementary teachers, paraprofessionals, education students) is large. Rates cluster at $25-$45 in most markets, with the upper end reserved for special-education specialists, Orton-Gillingham-certified reading tutors, and bilingual elementary tutors in high-demand languages. The elementary segment is where the "teacher's discount" friction is strongest; many credentialed teachers charge $30 when the market would clearly bear $50. The fix is to specialize: a K-5 reading intervention specialist with documented DIBELS score improvements can sustainably charge $60-$90, well above the generalist cluster.
Middle school (6-8)
Middle school tutoring sits in a transitional zone. Parents begin to feel academic stakes (high school placement, early algebra), but the work is not yet high-stakes test prep. Rates typically run 10 to 25 percent above elementary. The middle-school years are also when many students begin foreign language study and pre-algebra, both of which create demand for subject-specialist tutors rather than generalists. SSAT and ISEE preparation — for private school admission — is a meaningful sub-market in metros with strong private school ecosystems; SSAT tutors cluster at $55-$110.
High school (9-12)
High school is where tutor rates climb meaningfully. The work is genuinely harder (AP courses, college counseling, SAT/ACT prep), the supply of qualified tutors narrows, and parents are willing to pay for outcomes that affect college admissions. High-school AP and honors course tutoring clusters at $50-$110; SAT/ACT prep at $80-$180; college essay coaching at $90-$250. High school is also where the shift from generalist to specialist becomes financially critical — a tutor who teaches "high school math" competes with hundreds of others in any metro, while a tutor who teaches "AP Calculus BC and the AMC 12" has very few direct competitors.
College and graduate
College and graduate-level tutoring is a structurally different market. Students are paying for themselves (or with loans) and are price-sensitive in absolute terms, but the stakes are higher (a failed prerequisite can delay graduation by a year). Rates cluster at $70-$140 for undergraduate subjects and $100-$200 for graduate-level work. The qualified tutor pool is much smaller — most tutors are not credentialed to teach advanced organic chemistry, graduate econometrics, or medical-school pathology. The result is a market with both higher rates and longer client engagements, since a struggling graduate student typically needs 8 to 20 sessions rather than 3 to 5.
Adult professional
Adult professional tutoring is the smallest market by volume but the highest by rate. Examples include business Mandarin for executives ($120-$250), accent modification for medical professionals ($90-$180), technical writing for engineers ($80-$160), and case-interview math for consulting candidates ($120-$250). The clients are paying personally (no school district or parent subsidy) and value time above money. The engagements tend to be short and intensive (4 to 12 sessions), and the willingness to pay premium rates is high. Adult professional coaching is the segment most underserved by marketplace platforms, which means independent tutors who build referral networks in this segment can sustain $200+ rates indefinitely.
Part 6: Pricing models
The hourly rate is the most common tutor pricing model, but it is far from the only one. Six models dominate the U.S. market, and the most profitable tutors typically run a mix. The table below compares effective revenue per hour, retention rate, and overhead burden for each.

Private one-on-one
Private one-on-one tutoring — in-person at the tutor's home or office, online, or in a public space like a library — remains the default model. It is the most flexible, the most personal, and the most amenable to premium pricing. The trade-off is the lowest effective revenue per hour, because prep time and overhead cannot be amortized across multiple students. A full-time private tutor with strong demand can sustain $80-$130 per billable hour; the same tutor running groups can earn $140-$220 of effective revenue for the same calendar hour.
Online vs in-home
Online tutoring, accelerated by the pandemic, now accounts for roughly 45 percent of independent tutor bookings in our 2025 dataset. Online rates run 5 to 15 percent below equivalent in-person rates in the same market, but the effective take-home is often higher because online eliminates commute time, expands the addressable client base, and allows the tutor to fit more sessions into a day. In-home tutoring — the tutor travels to the student's home — commands a 15 to 30 percent premium over the same session delivered at the tutor's location, but the commute time and expense often eat the entire premium. Most experienced tutors reserve in-home for premium clients willing to pay $120+ per session, and shift everyone else to online or to a central meeting location. Semi-private (2-3 students)
Semi-private tutoring is the most underused model in independent tutoring. Two or three students — typically friends or siblings — share a session. Each student pays 60 to 75 percent of the private rate, so the tutor earns 120 to 150 percent of the private rate per hour. The student gets a lower per-student price and the social dynamic of peer learning. The trade-off is more complex preparation (differentiating within a group) and slightly less individual attention. Semi-private is particularly well-suited to test prep, foreign language conversation, and AP science review.
Group (4-8 students)
Group tutoring is the highest-revenue-per-hour model but the hardest to fill. A 6-student SAT class at $45 per student per hour grosses $270. The trade-off is marketing: filling 6 seats requires either an existing reputation, a school or community partnership, or paid acquisition. Group sessions also dilute individual attention, which makes them unsuitable for students who need remediation or who have learning differences. The most profitable tutors run a hybrid: a few high-rate private clients for income stability, plus a group class or two per week for revenue acceleration.
Hybrid
The hybrid model — a mix of private, semi-private, group, online, and in-person — is what most successful independent tutors converge on after two to three years. A typical hybrid week might include 12 private online sessions at $80, two semi-private pairs at $130 each, and one 6-student group at $270. Blended revenue per billable hour lands at $95-$115, with total weekly revenue of $1,800-$2,300 for 25-30 hours of work. Hybrid models also diversify client concentration risk — losing one private client is a 5 to 10 percent revenue hit rather than a 25 percent hit.
Part 7: Package pricing that drives retention
The single biggest revenue lever for an established tutor is moving clients from per-session billing to package billing. A tutor who books session-by-session averages 8 to 12 sessions per client before churn; the same tutor selling 10-session packages averages 17 to 22 sessions per client and collects revenue upfront.
