1. What are cookies?
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device (computer, phone, tablet) when you visit. Each cookie contains a name, a value, an expiry date, and the domain that set it. When you return to the website that set the cookie — or, in the case of third-party cookies, when you visit a different website that uses the same third-party service — your browser sends the cookie back to the server, allowing the server to "remember" things about your previous visit.
Cookies are not programs. They cannot execute code, install software, or access other files on your device. They are simply data files. But because they allow a website (or a third party) to remember you across pages and across visits, they raise legitimate privacy considerations — particularly when the third party is an advertising network that operates across thousands of websites and can therefore build a profile of your browsing behaviour across the web.
In addition to cookies, websites use several related technologies that function similarly: web beacons (also called pixel tags or clear GIFs — tiny invisible images embedded in a page that allow a server to know the page was loaded), local storage and session storage (HTML5 features that allow a website to store larger amounts of data on your device than a cookie can), ETag caching (a way for a server to identify a returning browser via its cache), and fingerprinting (a technique for identifying a browser based on its unique combination of configuration attributes). This Cookie Policy uses "cookies" as a shorthand for all of these technologies. We do not use browser fingerprinting on meyy.info.
Cookies broadly fall into two categories based on who sets them:
- First-party cookies are set by the website you are visiting (in this case, meyy.info). Your browser sends them back to meyy.info only. First-party cookies are typically used to remember your preferences and session state on the Site.
- Third-party cookies are set by a domain other than the one you are visiting. On meyy.info, third-party cookies are set primarily by Google (for AdSense advertising and, if enabled, Google Analytics) and by the Tailwind Play CDN. Your browser sends third-party cookies back to the third-party domain whenever you visit any website that uses that third-party service, which is how third-party advertising networks are able to track your browsing across many websites.
Modern browsers are increasingly blocking third-party cookies by default — Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) has done so since 2020, Firefox's Enhanced Tracking Protection does so by default, and Chrome began phasing out third-party cookies in 2024. Where third-party cookies are blocked, advertising networks are progressively moving to alternative mechanisms (such as Google's Privacy Sandbox APIs). This policy describes the current state; we will update it as the underlying technologies evolve.
2. Types of cookies we use
We categorise the cookies used on meyy.info into four types, following the framework recommended by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) cookie guide:
Type 1: Strictly necessary (essential) cookies
These cookies are required for the Site to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. They are usually set in response to actions you take that amount to a request for services — setting your cookie-consent preference, logging in (we do not currently have login), filling in the contact form, or maintaining security against abuse. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but if you do, some parts of the Site will not work. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable information that we use for marketing or profiling.
Type 2: Preference (functionality) cookies
These cookies allow the Site to remember choices you make (such as your username, your language preference, or your dark-mode setting) and provide enhanced, more personalised features. They are optional — the Site works without them. If we implement any user-facing preference that needs to persist across page loads (for example, a dark-mode toggle), it will be stored in a preference cookie. Currently, we do not set any preference cookies beyond the essential consent cookie.
Type 3: Analytics (performance) cookies
These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our Site. They help us know which pages are the most and least popular, which calculators are most used, which guides are most often exited mid-read, and how visitors move around the Site. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. If we enable Google Analytics, the specific analytics cookies set are listed in the next section. We configure any analytics tool we use in a privacy-conscious way: IP truncation, no cross-domain tracking, no user identification, and a short data retention period.
Type 4: Advertising (targeting) cookies
These cookies may be set on our Site by our advertising partners (currently Google AdSense). They may be used by those companies to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant advertisements on this Site and on other Sites you visit. They are also used to limit the number of times you see an ad and to help measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns. They are usually placed based on your prior visits to our Site and other Sites, and they enable Google and its partners to serve ads that are more relevant to your interests. If you do not allow these cookies, you will still see advertising — but it will be less tailored to your interests and may be less relevant to you.
3. Specific cookies we set
The table below lists the specific cookies that may be set when you visit meyy.info, the category each belongs to, the domain that sets it, its purpose, and its typical lifetime. Lifetimes are typical values and may vary by browser configuration.
| Cookie name | Category | Set by | Purpose | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
meyy_consent |
Essential | meyy.info (first-party) | Stores your cookie-consent choice (accepted/declined) so the consent banner does not reappear on every page load. | 12 months |
PHPSESSID |
Essential | meyy.info (first-party) | Session cookie used by PHP for security and abuse prevention (e.g., rate limiting of the contact form). Deleted when you close your browser. | Session |
__gads, __gpi |
Advertising | Google (third-party, .google.com domain) | Google AdSense cookies used to serve and measure ads. The __gads cookie stores a unique identifier that allows Google to recognise your browser across visits to sites using AdSense. __gpi is the Google Personalisation cookie used to remember your ad-personalisation choice. |
13–24 months |
IDE |
Advertising | Google DoubleClick (third-party, .doubleclick.net domain) | The DoubleClick DART cookie. Contains a unique identifier that allows Google and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites. Maximum lifetime 540 days. | Up to 540 days |
test_cookie |
Advertising | Google DoubleClick (third-party) | A short-lived cookie used by DoubleClick to check whether your browser accepts cookies. Deleted within 15 minutes of being set. | 15 minutes |
_ga |
Analytics | Google Analytics (third-party, if enabled) | Distinguishes individual users by assigning a random client identifier. Used to compute session count, user count, and other aggregate metrics. | 2 years |
_gid |
Analytics | Google Analytics (third-party, if enabled) | Distinguishes individual users for the purpose of computing daily aggregate metrics. Shorter-lived than _ga. |
24 hours |
_gat, _gat_* |
Analytics | Google Analytics (third-party, if enabled) | Throttle cookie used to limit the rate at which hits are sent to Google Analytics, to prevent overloading the analytics service. | 1 minute |
consent (Google) |
Advertising | Google (third-party) | Stores your consent state for Google's advertising cookies, set when you interact with Google's consent UI on a site that uses Google's Transparency and Consent Framework integration. | Up to 390 days |
If you have declined non-essential cookies via the consent banner, we will not set any of the analytics or advertising cookies ourselves, and Google AdSense will be loaded in "non-personalized ads" mode where possible. However, third-party cookies may still be set by Google and other third parties under certain conditions permitted by your browser's default behaviour — see the "Managing cookies in your browser" section below for how to control this.
4. Third-party cookies
The third-party cookies set on meyy.info are set by Google, the Tailwind Play CDN, and (if enabled) Google Analytics. The third-party domains that may set cookies in your browser when you visit the Site are:
- google.com and doubleclick.net — Google AdSense advertising cookies, including the
IDE(DoubleClick DART) cookie, the__gadscookie, and the__gpicookie. See Google's cookie policy for the full list of advertising cookies Google may set. - googletagmanager.com — if Google Tag Manager is used to deploy analytics and advertising tags, GTM may set its own cookies.
- google-analytics.com — if Google Analytics is enabled, the
_ga,_gid, and_gatcookies are set under the first-party domain (via the Measurement Protocol) or under google-analytics.com depending on configuration. We configure GA with first-party cookie storage and IP anonymization where possible. - fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com — Google Fonts. Google does not set persistent cookies for font delivery, but may log the request.
- cdn.tailwindcss.com — Tailwind Play CDN. The CDN may set standard caching cookies but no tracking cookies.
Each third party that sets cookies on the Site has its own cookie policy and privacy policy. We encourage you to review them. We do not control the cookies set by third parties, and the third parties may change their cookie practices without notifying us. We will update this policy when we become aware of material changes to third-party cookie practices that affect the Site.
For the full list of third-party vendors we work with and links to their privacy policies, see Section 7 of our Privacy Policy.
5. Managing cookies in your browser
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to: (a) refuse all cookies; (b) accept only first-party cookies; (c) block third-party cookies; (d) clear existing cookies; and (e) set per-site preferences. Below are links to the official cookie-management instructions for the four major browsers:
Google Chrome
- Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies.
- To block all third-party cookies, choose "Block third-party cookies". To block all cookies (which may break some sites), click Additional content settings → Cookies and select "Block all cookies".
- To manage cookies for a specific site (like meyy.info), click "Customized behaviours" and add the site with the desired setting.
- To clear existing cookies, return to Privacy and security → Clear browsing data, select "Cookies and other site data", choose the time range, and click "Clear data".
- Official help article: support.google.com/chrome/answer/95647.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open Firefox and click the hamburger menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Under Enhanced Tracking Protection, choose Strict to block all known tracking cookies (including most third-party advertising cookies), or Custom to fine-tune which cookies are blocked.
- To clear existing cookies, scroll to Cookies and Site Data → Clear Data, select "Cookies and Site Data", and click Clear.
- To set per-site preferences, click Manage Exceptions and add meyy.info with the desired setting.
- Official help article: support.mozilla.org/kb/cookies-information-websites-store-on-your-computer.
Safari (macOS)
- Open Safari and click Safari in the top menu bar → Settings (or Preferences on older versions).
- Click the Privacy tab.
- Under Cookie and website data, choose "Block all cookies" to block all cookies, or use the Manage Website Data button to review and remove cookies for specific sites.
- Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) blocks third-party tracking cookies by default. To verify, look at the Prevent cross-site tracking checkbox — it should be checked.
- To clear existing cookies, click Manage Website Data → Remove All.
- Official help article: support.apple.com/guide/safari/manage-cookies-and-website-data-sfri11471/mac.
Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge and click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Manage and delete cookies and site data.
- To block third-party cookies, enable "Block third-party cookies".
- To clear existing cookies, click See all cookies and site data → Remove all.
- To set per-site preferences, use Allow or Block lists and add meyy.info with the desired setting.
- Official help article: support.microsoft.com/microsoft-edge/delete-cookies-in-microsoft-edge.
If you use a different browser — Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, mobile Safari, Chrome on Android, etc. — the steps are similar. Look in the browser's settings under "Privacy" or "Cookies" for cookie controls. Most modern mobile browsers also offer a "Privacy Report" or "Tracking Prevention" feature that blocks third-party tracking cookies by default.
Please note: blocking all cookies (including first-party and essential cookies) may cause parts of the Site to malfunction — for example, the consent banner may reappear on every page load, or the contact form's anti-abuse protection may not work. Blocking only third-party cookies is the recommended approach and is sufficient to prevent advertising networks from tracking you across sites.
6. Opting out of personalized advertising
If you do not want personalized advertising — that is, if you do not want ads on meyy.info and other sites to be selected based on inferences about your interests derived from your browsing history — you have three effective options:
- Google Ads Settings. Visit www.google.com/settings/ads and toggle off "Ad personalization." This sets a Google opt-out cookie in your browser that prevents Google from using the
IDE(DART) and__gadscookies to serve personalized ads. You will still see ads on the Site — they will simply be selected based on the context of the page rather than your past browsing. - Digital Advertising Alliance (aboutads.info). Visit www.aboutads.info/choices and click "Opt out of all" to set opt-out cookies for every participating ad network in one place. The DAA also offers a "Persistent Opt-Out" browser extension for Firefox and Chrome that maintains the opt-out across cookie clears — useful if you clear your cookies regularly.
- Network Advertising Alliance (networkadvertising.org). Visit optout.networkadvertising.org for an alternative opt-out covering NAA member ad networks.
Important: opting out via Google Ads Settings or aboutads.info sets opt-out cookies in your browser. If you clear your cookies, switch browsers, switch devices, or use a different device to access the Site, you will need to re-apply the opt-out. The Persistent Opt-Out extension for Firefox and Chrome addresses this for desktop browsers; mobile users will need to re-apply the opt-out periodically.
For EU/UK users, you may also use the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance's opt-out at www.youronlinechoices.com, which covers ad networks operating in the European Economic Area.
7. Cookie consent mechanism
When you first visit meyy.info, a cookie-consent banner appears at the bottom of the page. The banner explains that we use cookies to improve your experience and to show relevant ads via Google AdSense, and provides two buttons: Accept and Decline.
- Accept — we set the
meyy_consentessential cookie with the value "accepted," load any non-essential cookies (analytics, advertising), and the banner disappears. If we have enabled Google AdSense, AdSense will load in its default mode (which may include personalized advertising depending on your prior Google Ads Settings state). - Decline — we set the
meyy_consentessential cookie with the value "declined," do not load any non-essential cookies ourselves, and (where technically possible) load Google AdSense in "non-personalized ads" mode. You will still see ads, but they will not be selected based on your past browsing. Some browsers may still permit third-party advertising cookies to be set under their default behaviour; see "Managing cookies in your browser" for instructions on blocking third-party cookies entirely.
The meyy_consent cookie persists for 12 months, after which the consent banner reappears and you are asked to make a fresh choice. To change your choice at any time, you can clear the meyy_consent cookie in your browser (see the browser-specific instructions above) and reload the page — the consent banner will reappear.
If you have declined non-essential cookies via the banner, and you later wish to opt back in, simply clear the meyy_consent cookie for meyy.info and reload the page.
8. Do Not Track & Global Privacy Control signals
Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal that, when enabled, sends an HTTP header to every website you visit indicating that you do not wish to be tracked. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission and several state laws reference DNT, but there is no federal legal requirement that websites honour it. Our current practices with respect to DNT are:
- For our own first-party analytics — we honour DNT. If your browser sends a DNT: 1 header, we do not record your visit in our analytics.
- For Google AdSense — Google AdSense does not currently honour DNT signals. To opt out of personalized advertising from Google, use the Ads Settings or aboutads.info opt-outs described above.
- For Google Analytics (if enabled) — Google Analytics does not honour DNT by default. If we enable GA, we will configure it to honour DNT via the
setDoNotTrackoption or via Google Tag Manager's DNT variable.
Some browsers (notably Brave and several privacy-focused extensions) now also send a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, which is a more recent standard that some state laws — including the CCPA as amended by the CPRA — require businesses to treat as an opt-out of "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. Our current practices with respect to GPC are:
- For our own first-party analytics — we honour GPC. If your browser sends a GPC signal, we treat it as an opt-out of any analytics collection.
- For Google AdSense — Google does not currently treat GPC as an opt-out of personalized advertising. To opt out of personalized advertising, use the Ads Settings or aboutads.info opt-outs described above, or block third-party cookies in your browser.
- For California residents under the CCPA/CPRA — we treat a GPC signal as a valid request to opt out of any "sale" or "sharing" of personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA. Because we do not sell personal information (see our Privacy Policy), the practical effect is limited to opting you out of any cross-context behavioral advertising, which you can also do via aboutads.info.
9. Updates to this Cookie Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use, the technologies we deploy, the third-party services we work with, or applicable legal requirements. When we make material changes — for example, adding a new category of cookie, enabling a new advertising or analytics vendor, or changing our consent mechanism — we will post a prominent notice on the homepage for at least 30 days and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
If a material change requires fresh consent under applicable law (for example, adding a new advertising vendor that requires opt-in consent in the EEA), we will re-display the consent banner and ask for your fresh consent before the change takes effect. Non-material changes (clarifications, formatting fixes, minor wording updates, updates to third-party cookie descriptions that do not change the practical effect on your privacy) take effect upon posting without prior notice.
We encourage you to review this Cookie Policy periodically. A history of material changes is maintained in our internal change log; for a copy of the change log or a previous version of this policy, email contact@meyy.info.
