The (1 − Target gross margin) divisor is the variable most makers get wrong. A maker who multiplies cost by 1.5 ("a 50 percent markup") sets price at $15 for a $10 cost item and earns 33 percent margin, not 50 percent — losing $2.55 of margin per unit relative to their intention.
